CARE INSTRUCTIONS
On average Living Lettuce will last longer than a week, because the roots are still attached. The roots will need access to water to keep from drying out. You can place them into a bowl of water or even a flower vase. You can also leave them in the paper delivery bag and spritz the roots with water every other day. If the lettuce's does dry out, no worries, they are very resistant and will bounce back quickly once they have access to water.
If you choose to let the lettuce live in a Vase of Pitcher, replace the water every other day.
Please wash lettuce before use. We do not use pesticides or chemicals, we wear proper personal protection and clean our equipment.
Once the roots are removed the lettuce will need to be refrigerated like any other lettuce. Know your ethylene produce. Certain fruits and vegetables release ethylene, which speeds the ripening process. Apples, apricots, cantaloupe, and honeydew are best kept in the fridge to keep them fresh longer. But store separate from greens! The ethylene emitted will wilt your future salad.
WHAT TYPE OF ROMAINE?
PARRIS ISLAND ROMAINE
Named after Parris Island, a small island off the eastern seaboard in South Carolina, Parris Island lettuce was first introduced in 1952. Today, it is celebrated as a reliable heirloom lettuce and is a favorite in the southeastern U.S. where it can be grown in fall, winter and spring. Parris Island “cos” lettuce also reportedly has the highest nutritional values of any lettuce. Parris Island lettuce is a romaine variety with dark green leaves and a cream to white heart. It forms vase-shaped heads which can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm.) tall. However, its outer leaves are usually harvested as needed for garden fresh salads or a sweet, crisp addition to sandwiches, rather than the whole head being harvested at once. In addition to its long season and exceptional nutrition values.
